Notice: First Nations can now access their oil and gas information in Petrinex

What is Petrinex?

Petrinex is the online oil and gas industry reporting system used by oil and gas companies as well as governments and regulators in Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Manitoba.

What Petrinex information can First Nations now access?

First Nation representatives can now access information oil and gas companies enter into Petrinex for activity on their designated lands, including:

• volumetric reporting for well, pipelines and facilities
• cost and royalty reporting
• well and facility licencing, linkages and status

How is the information from Petrinex currently used?

Indian Oil and Gas Canada (IOGC) and provincial governments and regulators use Petrinex to assess, verify and audit the volumetric, royalty, well and facility information companies report.

Why is this information important to First Nations?

Direct access gives your First Nation the same underlying information IOGC and the provinces work from. It can support decisions such as:

• current and future economic development including oil and gas
• whether to proceed with a First Nation-initiated audit
• financial planning

Who and how can First Nations access their information?

Chief and Council, or a designated Oil and Gas Representative(s) can request Petrinex access either directly through Petrinex or through IOGC.

To apply for Petrinex access directly through Petrinex:

• Your First Nation will need to appoint a User Security Administrator (USA), who will manage Petrinex user accounts for your First Nation.
• You will need to upload an assigned letter of authorization on your First Nation's letterhead identifying the USA when filling out the Apply for Access form which can be accessed by province on the Access to Petrinex webpage.
• Online help is available to assist with First Nation access applications in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba and can be found in the in the upper-right corner of the access application form.

To apply for Petrinex access through IOGC:

• We verify and are able to provide access to First Nation Chiefs and Councillors or designated oil and gas representatives upon request.
• We may be able to use an existing Band Council Resolution (BCR) if you have already been appointed as Chief and Council's designated oil and gas representative.

Do First Nations get access to all Petrinex information?

No. First Nation access is linked to your First Nation's designated lands. You will not be able to see information for another First Nation's designated lands, or a company's activity outside of those lands. Within your designated lands, you can access the information companies are required to report, except for information that is confidential under applicable legislation.
