Environmental Updates

For oil and gas developments on First Nation Land, all environmental reports submitted to Provincial Regulators must also be submitted to IOGC and the applicable First Nation.

For oil and gas leases on First Nations Reserve lands, companies submitting environmental reports through Alberta Energy Regulator’s OneStop tool, for example, as part of work to manage substance release incidents or the Alberta Site Rehabilitation Program (SRP) invoicing requirements, are also required to submit these reports to IOGC and the applicable First Nation. Final reclamation applications must also be submitted to IOGC for review and approval and to the applicable First Nation. Under the Indian Oil and Gas Act 2019, IOGC is responsible for oversight and approval of all oil and gas remediation and reclamation work on designated First Nation lands.

While information is in the public domain, the Alberta Energy Regulator does not routinely notify IOGC or First Nations when submissions are received through their OneStop tool. This applies to similar submission programs in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

If you have questions, please contact the Environment Unit at IOGC : IOGC-Environment-Notification@sac-isc.gc.ca, or the IOGC Environmental Analyst responsible for the First Nation Reserve you are interested in.
